(My Gourmet Mashed Potatoes that I ate way TOO much of last night.)
This graduation weekend, I spent a lot of time around some of my favorite comfort foods.
You know the ones.
Foods that hold nostalgia or remind us of special childhood memories. Quite possibly your favorite comfort foods soothe you, pique positive emotions or on the downside are consumed to relieve negative stress and before you know it, the batch of cookies is gone.
Often we bring comfort foods into the occasion during times of celebration, and for me, I know my favorite comfort foods are always associated with carbs.
For others, it’s the satisfying thought of Chicken Noodle soup when one is sick or Shepherd’s Pie, just like Gram used to make. It might even be something as simple as Grilled Cheese and canned Tomato Soup because those stir up special traditions. I know with a group this big, the term comfort food has a broad sweeping reach, so please share yours.
I thought it would be really fun to do a quick impromptu poll in the comments stating our favorite comfort foods. Then I am going to tally them and bring us a “Go To” list and hopefully incorporate that into my photo recipes section.
Here are some of my Top Five comfort food favorites. (And yes, french fries would also be up here if they seemed more “comforting.”) 🙂
Copy Cat Cracker Barrel Hashbrown Casserole Recipe
Gourmet Mashed Potatoes (which work perfectly to Make Ahead to stick in Fridge or Freeze)
Double Stuffed, Twice Baked Potatoes (also perfect to make ahead)
Homemade French Bread (with me showing you just how easy it really can be)
Then you can move onto Homemade Butterhorn Rolls or any hot out of the oven bread is so yummy.
And last but not least, my Copy Cat Cinnabon Recipe.
All the others above, anyone can whip up in minutes. These are a little bit more time consuming, but worth every minute.
Homemade Cinnamon Rolls (Copy Cat Cinnabon Rolls)
And just imagine. I took this picture before the rolls were even baked. Envision them finished with that yummy frosting.
So here are some of my Top Comfort Food Recipes. This is also the indicating factor of why 2 – 3 times a year, I do a 7 day Carb detox to completely break myself from the Carbohydrate cravings. 🙂 That too, is a good thing.
So for this Tasty Tuesday, I would so appreciate you popping in the comments and sharing your favorite comfort foods for my impromptu poll.
I think this will be a fun one.
I can’t wait to see what you have been dishing up this week.
As always, please link up to your specific recipe, link back here in your post and only link up two recipes (no recipe carnivals, please.)
Pizza! In any shape or form… even for breakfast.
yumm… potatoes would definately fit into the comfort food category for me. For my children, anything Mexican.
Congratulations to your son!
Comfort Food: Deep Dish Pizza (like pizza hut); Chicken and Dumplings, goulash, homemade biscuit and gravy, 12 different kinds of breads, nearly anything chocolate.
After I saw your first 3, I had to go read again, thinking it was a best potatoes list and I had missed something! lol. Carbs equal comfort food for me as well!
I know. Isn’t that so sad. I would choose potatoes over any food, so it sure does read like a best potato list, but then I’d have to add in homemade fries, breakfast skillet, baked potato bar…hmm, sensing a post coming on. 😉
This past weekend I made my Gram’s recipe of Rhubarb Pie. I haven’t made it in years, my niece came over and we kept saying it smelled like home, and then we ate it, and it tasted like home. My daughter ended up getting the video camera to film my niece and I (the only ones that will eat it) enjoying every bite of the pie. We didn’t need plates just the pie pan between us and some very happy ladies were we.
Kim, I just love that story. And I so agree, ladies and pie pan = wonderful family time. 🙂
Homemade spaghetti, sauteed potatoes and onions cooked until they are burnt, warm chocolate cookies right out of the oven! I am sure there are more, but that is what cam to mind right away.
Mine has got to be brownies. Oh and Dark Chocolate and Dr. Pepper. Right after my mom passed away (5 years ago now) everyone who dropped by had either a big old icy Dr Pepper in their hand for me or a giant dark chocolate bar. I think only one friend brought the traditional flowers. Sigh my friends no me well, so well that they caused me to grieve myself up a pant size. Oh well thankfully I took up running right around the same time and now I have again lost those grieving pounds.
Potatoes, pasta or breads. So any carbs, pretty much 😉
Posted just in time for me to make-ahead for our company coming in from out-of-town tomorrow. Thank you, Jen!!
Homemade Macaroni and Cheese
Coca Cola Cake
Both are sinfully delicious!
Chicken and dumplings, fried chicken, chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and cream gravy, buttermilk biscuits, peach cobbler, and german chocolate cake! Just about anything my mom was so good at making. I think I need to make some comfort food for dinner!
It’s always “grandma” food that is pure comfort to me. Stuff like turnips and cornbread, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, and pimento cheese. I could eat my weight in a bowl of chicken salad. Yum!
I LOVE your picture for this post!
Mac and cheese, chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls and pizza, those are my go-to comfort foods. Thanks for hosting, having a wonderful week!
My comfort food are the meals from my childhood…chicken and rice or spaghetti. And the funny this is that my mom is NOT a cook. She made like three things and rotated them. ; )
Why is it bread and potatoes always are our top comfort foods. Yeah, I agree it’s those southern foods that make us lick our lips and want more.Love the photo of you holding the potatoes;)
My comfort foods are all things that are not part of our usual diet: twice-baked potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and grilled cheese sandwiches come to mind immediately. Basically, anything with cheese and starches, which is definitely not part of our Paleo diet (and may be why I do enjoy them so much when we do have them now). Those are all foods I grew up on, though, too.
Pasta is for sure a comfort food of ours! Today I shared my no canned ingredient scratch marinara recipe #3 – Mighty Mushroom!
ICE CREAM!!! That is #1 for me. Then, potato salad, deviled eggs, Roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy, APPLE PIE!!!! Now, I am hungry:):) XO, Pinky
My family is Italian, so anything Italian is comfort food to me. I find myself reaching for noodles when I am tired. 😉
My grandmother and aunt used to make the absolute best ravioli in th world, but sadly, my grandma passed last year, and my dear aunt is now getting on in years and can’t make them anymore. Very sad for me, I can’t cook nearly as well as they did, so I feel like I will never have my favorite comfort food again! 🙁
my mom made pea soup with chunks of ham and a floater of cream – that’s my favorite, but requires some prep (and leftover ham bones). easier is spaghetti and lima beans, drain and add sour cream and milk to make “soup”. i instantly feel like i’m 10 and home from school with her taking care of me.
Some of my favorite comfort foods are meatloaf, spaghetti and meatballs, Norwegian meatballs, and grilled cheese. Your potatoes look yummy! I guess once in a while is OK, just not on a regular basis.
Thanks for sharing!
My comfort foods are tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches (from my childhood); meatloaf, and mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes got me through chemo a few years ago.
A delicious warm bowl of soup is a big comfort food to me. I shared a recipe for green soup from foraged greens along with information on reducing the oxalic acid in the greens to improve mineral absorption.
Wow, my comfort foods can change from mood to mood, but I have to say – anything with a bunch of carbs will usually do the trick…and those cinnamon rolls look MIGHTY tasty 😀
Fun survey!
My sweet comfort food would be warm chocolate chip cookies topped with vanilla bean ice cream and Hersheys chocolate syrup (if you want to get really old school…I love the syrup out of the can that you use a can opener to puncture the top!). My savory comfort food would be grilled cheese sandwiches with crispy fries and lots of ketchup.
Oh…and for a bonus…graham crackers smeared with peanut butter and topped with mini-marshmallows…toasted under the broiler and then drizzled with that same can of chocolate syrup!
Any of my mom’s recipes are comfort food for me 🙂 I especially love her green bean casserole, all of her cookie recipes, and one delicious concoction called Cornflake Cookies. They have corn syrup, so I rarely make them, but OH my do they bring back memories! 🙂
Cheese cake and honey bun cake! Yummy
