Window’s cracked open, spray paint bottles dusted off, and storage bins pulled for a make-over…life is good. Spray paint sprayin’ definitely means springs a comin’. Forget the ground hog, this is a much surer sign.
This $5 yard sale shelf treasure has served me faithfully, but has been waiting patiently for a spruce up. Slowly, I’ve picked up organizational bins from yard sales. The price is right with that route, but the lack of matching baskets may astound some of you. For me, I don’t need it to be “matchy – matchy”, in fact, I love the character that comes from varying styles, but I DO want them to be the same color.
The solution to that issue is as simple as spray paint. I have a combination of fabric, metal, plastic and wicker organizational baskets and bins. The beauty of spray paint is that it will work perfectly on all these surfaces.
Don’t pass up second hand deals due to color. You can always make it work in just minutes.
This past fall, I purchased these two fabric totes for only $0.50. I LOVE those finds. Yet knowing that I am not a tan fan, spray paint comes to the rescue. In just a few minutes, I went from the tan to the blue. It’s so fun to be able to experiment on inexpensive items.
I wanted to just test out how it would work so I used the $1 paint that I already had from spray painting my kitchen knobs. I wasn’t guaranteed the quality of paint coverage on such a large fabric surface, but it worked perfectly, although the shade of blue is not what I anticipated. Paint is like that. Shades differ so much on walls, fabric, handles etc. It’s nearly impossible to guess until you see it on the surface.
Here is just a glimpse of what you can do in five minutes. You know I think that paint is one of the easiest, quickest, and definitely the most frugal way to update and change any decorating aspect in your home. Yes, spray paint is your best DIY instant make over.
Now, I need to go buy a new paint color and hit these surfaces again so there’s some uniformity.
Stay tuned.
Maybe by mid June, I’ll actually have the shelf repainted as well. 🙂
I actually love that shade of blue on the knobs! I would totally do this =)
Yes, the blue on the knobs has stayed, but the blue on the fabric is going to be tweaked a bit. 🙂
What brand/type of spray paint do you use for projects like these and where do you buy it? Thanks!
You put a smile on my face with the picture of your 4 different colored baskets! Some people would say that in itself is the ultimate in shabby chic, and you didn’t even plan it that way! And yes, the blue on your knobs is very pretty!
Love the shelf, very cute. i use Inexpensive garage sale items for my experiments as well but I wouldn’t have thought to paint fabric totes. Learned something new, thanks.
Thank you! This is exactly what I needed to read. There is a perfect fitting bin for a shelf that I have, but it only comes in a few colors. I was wondering if I could just buy the off-white one and paint it. Spray painting seemed the easiest, but I didn’t know if it would work (I’m not much of a crafter). I’m thrilled to hear that it works! So I’m assuming (hoping) that it doesn’t wear off with use?
It’s been over eight months and mine still looks like new. 🙂 Have fun!
@Jen, Thanks for your quick response =) I’m glad to hear that it lasts!
