Share Your Strawberry Ideas (in the comments)

May23

Strawberry Picking Season is in full force down south, and I know that many of you Northerners are waiting your turn. I thought it would be fun to gather up all the tried and true Strawberry Recipes in one spot.

This idea came last evening when my 11 year old daughter decided to make her secret home made strawberry ice cream recipe. She and my nephew have been testing out their “special” concotions the last few evenings, and when I asked her for the recipe, she informed me that they would not tell. It was their secret, and they were going to sell it.

After a brief entrepreneurial discussion, she  understood that right now it may be better to share the recipe with those who want it, but quite possibly, on a hot summer day, people may purchase their homemade ice cream. She made a large batch to share, but realized that due to their secret ingredient (tofu), the consistency changes once it’s frozen over night – so many life lessons to be had by this budding entrepreneur. :)

I’m fairly certain she will break down and share the recipe. I even told her that maybe I would pay her for it, if we can share this healthy strawberry/mixed berry tofu ice cream recipe with my readers.

I make so much with strawberries, since I pick and freeze for post-strawberry picking season, but I realized I have relatively few of these recipes posted.

Until I can post more of my original strawberry recipes,  I would love for you to share your favorite strawberry recipes in the comments.
I will collaborate them into one index page, with the name of your strawberry recipe and a link back to the blog post where you shared it, so that readers can find the recipe.
If you don’t have a blog, but have a great recipe to share, please submit it through the submit guest post button above. It would be especially helpful if you have a picture to go with it.
So let’s talk berry picking.
Do you traditionally go out picking? Do you have any traditions tied in with strawberry season?

  7. My absolutely favorite way to eat strawberries (other than fresh and adorned of course) is to first dip them in sour cream, then in brown sugar. Fabulous!

We do go strawberry picking at a upick stand right outside of Charleston! It is fun since we do not grow these at our place!

  10. We love to make strawberries and bananas with our fresh strawberries. Just cut up strawberries and bananas until you fill a bowl and squeeze some lime juice over it.

We also make smoothies with frozen strawberries. We use a banana (or two), some yogurt (or keifer), honey, splash of vanilla, frozen strawberries and a little milk if it is too think for the blended. Our favorite summertime snack.

@Angi, I never thought to put vanilla in our smoothies! YUM! And we can use our homemade vanilla too! (Organic Madagascar beans and vodka). We use kefir also. The girls love it!

  11. I used the book Cook-a-Doodle-Doo with my little girls — and then, we made strawberry shortcake! I had to adapt it because my daughter has egg allergies (she also has milk allergies, so we just didn’t put whipped cream on hers). It is delicious. And the book is delightful!

  13. We LOVE strawberries! Linked up our newest way to enjoy them — a strawberry rhubarb pineapple crumble. We also just made strawberry rhubarb jam!

  14. My kids, except for one, absolutely love strawberries. This week, I’m making strawberry jam with strawberries in the freezer from last year to make room for the 3 flats of IPM strawberries that I’m picking up at the farmers market on Thursday.

Some of our favorites – strawberry jam, strawberry mousse, strawberry syrup (Tammy’s Recipes has this), strawberry trifle, and strawberry smoothies.

  15. We go strawberry-picking every Mother’s Day. This year we’ve picked twice already, and the season is almost over down here. I have yet to make strawberry jam, though. Maybe this weekend we’ll pick some more and make it.

  16. I live in PA and we have had A LOT of rain this spring, something like 10 inches above normal. That is not good news for the local strawberry harvest. I should have gone to the U-Pick farm by now, but the season has been delayed by about 2 weeks IF we get some sun. If we don’t get any sun, the season might be a bust. Which makes me want to cry!

@Kristia@Family Balance Sheet, Buy some alpine strawberry plants or everbearers, and plant them at home. Maybe that will help? I would be sad too, if we couldn’t pick any strawberries.

  17. We don’t have a local u-pick farm. I wish we did. I have been laoding up at the farmer’s market. Right now I am making lots and lots of Strawberry Bread and Strawberry Lemon Marmalade.

  20. Yes, I love to go strawberry picking! This year I also bought some from the co-op, and then a week later, when I pulled the second bucket out of the fridge to freeze the rest, there was a black widow in them! Ahhh!!! I guess little critters love strawberries too.

  25. One of our family favorites came from a New Hampshire restaurant years ago. Dip a whole strawberry in sour cream to taste, then into granulated maple sugar (available at some grocery stores and gourmet stores). This is simple but so good. And, for July 4, my mom arranges the strawberries, sour cream and sugar in cobalt blue dishes. Very festive!

  29. Sure, rub it in that strawberry season is here for some parts of the country. ;) LOL. Here in CNY strawberry season isn’t until mid-June, but it’s going to be delayed for a couple of weeks because of the very rainy start to growing season. :(

Can’t wait to go berry picking with my Mom and boys. :)

  34. Oh my GOODNESS I didn’t see this post when it first came out! I have a strawberry bed that is 4′x20′. The plants get 18″ tall and we pick between 10-13 gallons of berries every year. By mid-July (yes I’m a Northwesterner) my freezer is stuffed full of freezer bags of whole and cut, hulled strawberries. I have been using recipes on commercial packages… s strawberry rhubarb pie recipe on a tapioca box, a freezer jam recipe from a pectin box, etc. It’s going to take me a while to work though all of the posts linked up, but I can’t wait! :) This is great!
