This post brought to you by Nutrish. All opinions are 100% mine.
A few weeks ago, I was asking my Balancing Beauty and Bedlam face book fans what their best suggestions were for saving money on pet food. With three dogs, two cats, and multiple chickens, it often feels like we spend more on our pets’ food than we do on our own household food budget, and honestly, some months we do.
I was surprised when many of you mentioned investing in quality all natural dog food. The reasoning was that the animal absorbs more of the nutrients, leaves them feeling more full, they eat less, and there’s none of the junk mixed in.
So after listening to what some of you recommended, when Nutrish offered me a free sample of their Rachael Ray Nutrish just 6 dry dog food made with only six, simple all natural ingredients, I was all for it. Just like with my own food budget, I look for ways to eat healthy and save at the same time.
One of our dogs has been very picky lately, and leaving her normal dog food untouched until she is famished. I decided to use the sample for her, and she immediately gobbled it all up. Yes, my picky eater polished her bowl clean in minutes.
I haven’t been to the store yet to price out Nutrish, but I am thrilled to offer you all not only a free sample ,but also a coupon that you can print from their site.
Enjoy! I can’t wait to hear some more of your suggestions. Only a few of you weighed in on Facebook, and I’d love a more comprehensive list on how to save money on pet food.

Thanks so much for the link to the free sample! My mother has 5 dogs (yes, 5! plus 2 birds), and is always looking for ways to save money on their huge pet food bill.
I feed pedigree healthy weight to my lab. I try to stock up when it goes on sale at target so that when you buy 2 you get a $5 GC. I also match that with coupons. Last time I stocked up I got 6 bags at only $5.50 per bag for the 30 lb (I think) bags. I thought that was a great deal.
Well, with no children yet, by dog is my baby. So, although there are many cheaper brands out there, I feed her a premium food (Wellness) that is better for her than cheaper brands. Most brands have corn as one of the top three if not the first ingredient, and corn should not be a major ingredient in a dogs diet due to the carbs and sugar. (It also is thought to likely lead to a shorter lifespan for your dog). You pay more for premium not only because they have less fillers, but also because the main ingredients are meat, which provide the protein your dog needs. That being said the maker of my dogs food provides manufacturer coupons of $3.00 to $5.00 off simply by signing up for their newsletter. Maybe other manufacturers also offer the same?
I have been feeding my dog and cats Purina One Beyond. It is made without all the fillers (corn and wheat), so you feed them less. Also, there is less waste to pick up in the yard and clean out of the litter box. From what I have seen with my pets it’s true. Really!
I have fed my dog Nutrish in the past, and he really liked it!
We’re new dog owners and have been doing a ton of research on different types of food. We’re currently trying Blue Buffalo, which does offer a $5 coupon for signing up at their website.
It’s hard to find one that’s good for your dog, but is also a reasonable price.
True story is we adopted a dog from the pound which was feeding him cheap dog food with lots of filler. I bought expensive high quality dog food and he promptly broke out in a rash. We switched again and another rash. We now use the cheapest stuff we can find and he is happy and healthy for over a year.
