As an update to my previous post, please remind me not to write a blog post at midnight on a jam packed day. 🙂
I tend to forget that I have new followers who don’t know “my blog history” or the behind the scenes scenario.
So welcome new followers! This is surely a fun place to be where you’ll follow our beauty and bedlam of frugal homemaking (and yes, some rare animal posts. 🙂
One of the reasons we have animals is to teach our children to love on God’s creatures, nurture their love of nature, learn responsibility, and yes, to show them that chores are a GOOD THING!
Since the previous post didn’t give specific details, I thought I would assure you all of the chicks welfare.
Our yellow lab is actually pregnant and has tremendous “nesting” instincts. She is gentle, loving. and has watched over our flock of chickens tending to them as her own.
In these pictures, our dog was actually licking them and making sure that they didn’t jump out of the box. It’s really precious because every time they jump up on the side of the box, she rushes over, grooms them, and then nudges them back in the box.
Baby chicks have to be fully feathered before they can stay outside in the elements. Due to the unseasonably cold evenings, we had to bring them inside at night (since we have no garage) until they were fully feathered.
As of this weekend, they are outside….there’s only so much bedlam even this mom can take. 🙂
I liked the original post. I dont think anything should be changed about it. Labs are gentle creatures and I assumed she was helping, not eating them. It is all good. =D
You poor thing. Don’t get all stressed out about people who make quick judgements. Don’t change your original post – the pics are adorable. Maybe just put a **disclaimer** below them and people will get their panties re-adjusted.
Have a wonderful Monday full of all kinds of bedlam.
I didn’t for a moment think the bedlam moment would actually be something bad. I always LOVE seeing the pictures of your animals around your home. I especially love seeing the goat…lol. How sweet that the lab is nurturing those baby chicks….awwwwwwww
Please don’t be stressed! I haven’t been following your blog very long but I can tell you are the type of person that would never put a creature in harms way. Perhaps people should ask questions instead of being so quick to judge. Those are lucky chicks to have a new home at your place! Love reading your blog! Thanks for all you do!
oh I think your first post was fine! I assumed the dog was nudging the chick back in the box to keep it safe. I never once thought the dog ATE the chick, lol. because would you really post it if she did? i don’t think so! lol. don’t worry about it!
I was going to comment on your last post about what a gentle mouth your lab appears to have. It showed even in the picture you took off the last post. I’m sorry you had to read any really negative comments about it, that had to be a complete shock for you!!
I just read your last post and wanted to let you know that it didn’t even cross my mind that any animals were harmed in the writing of that post. 🙂
I think it’s wonderful that your kids are learning about God’s creation by helping to care for it and His creatures. Good for you!
Love ya, girl!
Kimba
I think that photo is adorable! Such a sweet doggie to help that chick back to safety! 🙂
xo
I’m behind on reading blogs today, so I had to go over and read your post immediately after reading this one. I think those photos are ADORABLE. I guess everyone doesn’t realize that all kinds of species can get along just fine.
Last night I was watching Extreme home makeover and before I knew it I had hubby, all three dogs, and our two cats on the bed with me! Our species get along wonderfully, and yours obviously do too. 🙂
Of course no chicks were harmed, we would have known that all along! Your dog looks so sweet and gentle. xoxo
Jen, those of us who know you (even if only from being faithful followers of your wonderful blog) know that never in a million years would you put any creature in your path in harm’s way. Hugs and blessings!
We’ve had chicks in a big tub in the kitchen before…to grow, not to eat! 🙂
Have fun!
~Kim
Jen,
I thought those pictures were adorable. I think you are teaching your children a valuable lesson in caring for animals. That is just wonderful! I doubt very seriously that you would have allowed harm to come to those chicks. Your lab sounds so sweet!
That is SOOOOO SWEEEEEET! I’m sure my horse…uh, I mean puppy, would NOT have treated them so sweetly. “OOOOH, new play toys! That move on their own!!!! Lemme at ’em!!!” : )
I never gave a thought to the little chicks being harmed! I thought the pics were sweet!
It’s amazing how some critters will act in that way with another animal. We’ve see dogs care for kittens and vice versa…mind you wasn’t always the case, but when it did happen it was truely amazing. And to see your lab who would really have more of a hunting instinct when it comes to birds of any type that truely is amazing her care over the chicks.
To let you know I gave your button a try again and even did some investigation within wordpress. It’s not happening with anything else I do but your html code goes into broken mode once I hit save to post it …half the code disappears. So I don’t know what to say.
