“Mom, I am definitely going to have to snag those from your closet,” my thirteen year old daughter remarked when she saw the new peach (or are they coral?) Gap Skimmer jeans.
Who needs Tim Gunn when I live with a born stylist? She loves her fashion, and I take that as quite the raving review.
People always ask me, “What are the two items that you’d actually invest good money in and break some of your Frugal Fashionista “rules?”
That’s so easy, and I’ve stated it since the beginning of my series – unique statement pieces like a bold necklace, earrings, scarf, or shoes, and a great pair of jeans.
Gap jeans are near and dear to my heart. They were the first pair of jeans that I ever purchased full price. I wore them for over ten years (shhh), and they still looked good even after a decade of wear. Good fitting jeans are worth the investment.
Quality. Definite Quality.
Since new stylish jeans are on my list of upcoming purchases, I have to take my “Mom Jeans” up a notch, and the opportunity to try out Gap’s new Skimmer length jeans came at a great time.
But better yet? I’ll be sharing a chance for you to win some next week (along with a great $20 off coupon for you to try them yourself) so keep on the look out for that post.
My daughters came shopping, and they picked out not only the peach colored jeans for me, but my 13 year old daughter found the same color shirt slashed 70% off, and wanted to buy it out of her own money. I intervened and said, ‘My treat.”

The peach/coral jeans are a bit bold, but I think everyone should live just a tad dangerously and include some great pops of color in one’s wardrobe. These are so fun for the summer, and the length is perfect. No more attempting to hem or roll them to achieve the perfect length (and yes, I do that with a ton of my thrifted pants just trying to make them work).
The style is perfect.
Don’t you just love all the way these are styled? From casual to a night on the town, the Skimmer Jeans work wonderfully for both, and I love all the ideas I can get for my summer wardrobe.
I already have white tees, cardigans and now I am on the hunt for colored flats and that cool jean jacket.
Black Tank: I’ve had for years and still my favorite
$3 Scarf: favorite ever scarf find
Skimmer Jeans: Gap
Flats: I admit, my daughter’s and they are tight.
I love that this look can transition from winter, with the black cardigan that I had over the tank, to spring, by just removing the sweater.
One more up close look at my fun find
So let’s talk jeans. I’d love to get your input.
Is it hard for you to find jeans that fit well?
What do you look for in a pair of jeans? What’s your favorite length?
Those look adorable and I have $10 in GapRewards in my inbox. Gap has been putting out a lot of good online offers for silver card holders (makes me sound fancy, but I’m not!). 90% of the pants/jeans in my closet are from Gap because I know how certain fits will fit. I lived in Japan and in Germany and could always count on ordering my Gap jeans online and having a good fit.
Jeans are the worst though–I’m 5’9″ and it’s so hard to find an inseam that is just the right length. Right now I have SO many pairs of skinny jeans, but I recently had a little weight fluctuation too and so had to give away many smaller pair that fit a few months ago but suddenly I couldn’t get the button even close to the buttonhole. Ugh. I’m like you in that people don’t notice the gain because of my height. But I notice.
Anyway–I just ordered some bootcuts from Gap online, but I’m going back to check out the skimmers, because they look awesome!
The Skimmers are 25% off online. If you are debating between two sizes, go with the smaller ones. They stretch. Like in the picture with the scarf, you can see I had just put them on for the day. (haha) but the one with the oversize white shirt, you can tell they’d relaxed a bit. If you want to shop in store, my next post will have a coupon. 🙂
You look fantastic!! I love that color for Spring! It works so well with all complexions.
In good jeans I look for a mid rise. Since having a child, the lowcut jeans just don’t work for me anymore. I am on the floor playing way too much and that exposure. I also shop specifically for jeans that will go with certain shoes. I have some long jeans for heels, and short jeans for flats!
I have a hard time finding something that will fit my hips and waist. Gap usually has some low rise pants that fit me well. I have a couple of pairs that have lasted a long time.
i am 5’9″ as well and i have a hard time with jeans for a couple reasons. one, i don’t like the waist to be so low i feel like i’m falling out of them. two, i am at least one size bigger in the hips than in the waist, so don’t like when i the waist is so big i could fit an extra person in!! i do like gap jeans though. i always look for gap items when i shop second hand. i have several items that i’ve had for years that have stood the test and still look as good when i purchased them. i rarely shop in their retail store, i’ve actually never had a “NEW’ pair of gap jeans!! but, with a coupon i may have to get a new pair of skimmers for spring!!
Honestly, Gap jeans are the only pairs that I have ever bought retail. They have so many choices in fit, but I am doing a major clear out of my closet to see what jeans actually fit and which I am just “trying” to get to fit. With thrifting, I’ve bought so many that don’t really work, but I was trying. 😉
Love, love, love GAP jeans! I own that same pair 🙂
Love your Gap jeans~ unfortunately, they all seem to be low rise and it’s not a comfortable or flattering fit for me. I go with NYDJ ~(aka Not Your Daughters Jeans) from Macy’s. They have a bit of stretch, fit great, make me look slimmer and flatter my “fanny”. For anyone that needs slimmer waist than hips, this is a choice. They come in many lengths, colors & cuts.
I like ankle length, or a bit longer, slim jeans for winter. For summer, this skimmer cut is great! I’m looking to get a pair of colored jeans for spring in this new length.
I can’t believe it. I had never heard of those NYDJ until two days ago and now you are the second person to mention them. I may definitely have to look into them. 🙂
I have a tough time finding jeans that don’t gap. I am 5’3″ so my jeans mainly have to be bootcut and petite in size 12. Rider jeans are the only ones that do not gap for me in back. But Rider changed their pockets last year and I am not a fan of them.
I do own a couple of pair of skinny colored jeans (teal and hot pink). I wore my hot pink skinny jeans today with black Clark’s riding boots ($2 at church rummage sale two years ago that still look brand new even to these day). And I rocked those hot pink skinny jeans 🙂 I got lots of compliments today on them from women and girls at my boys’ school. 🙂 They were $3 Gloria Vanderbilts from end of summer clearance at SEARS last summer. My husband hates my hot pink skinny jeans though. He thinks women should just wear basic denim for casual. LOL. He is so not trendy. I’m on a mission to find royal blue skinny jeans because that seems to be a good color on me.
I do own a pair of black Gap boootcut jeans that I bought in like new condition at a rummage sale last year for $2. But they ironically, “gap” in the back.
BTW I love your beautiful thrifted scarf Jen!
My problem is finding LONG jeans I am 6’0 ……I LOVE THE GAP for myself and 2 daughters 7 & 19 🙂
@Cindy B., One of my daughters is a 6′ tall size 4, and we buy her jeans at American Eagle Outfitters (online only). Their x-long has a 36″ inseam, and I never pay more than $30 when I buy them on sale.
Oh my… just ask my mom and sister… it is extremely hard for me to find jeans that I love…. and yes, when I do find that 1 pair — I wear them over and over again!!!… I’m drawn to jeans at consignment stores and at Goodwill, … and in the dressing room…. I love them!… BUT, I come home… and none of them look right with my shoes!!!…. (To solve that problem… just bc I still love the jeans… I believe I will make them all into capris :)!!!)…. Anways, I like bootcut!!!… With a little more flare for tennis shoes:)…. Well, I take that back… I like flare with my “clogs” too!!!!….Anways…. yep!
They had several styles similar to the floral pants shown here on clearance at Target a few weeks ago, and I confess I bought two pairs…. one boldly colored and the other more understated (if such a thing can be said to be so) in shades of blue and taupe. I would have never guessed it, but I am wearing the heck out of those things! Go figure.
My 17 year old daughter had the temerity to suggest they were “too young” for me (my reaction to that pronouncement wasn’t my finest parenting moment….). She won’t do that again anytime soon, and also admitted that when she saw how I wore them (oxford cloth shirt, “comfort” flats, scarf), it wasn’t anything like a girl her age would do. I think the word she used was “mom-ish”, by which she totally redeemed herself, since that is exactly what I am!
Oh Kristina – I totally laughed out loud at your “finest parenting moment.” I think I was right there when my daughter said, you look like your being a teenager, but then promptly said she wanted to borrow them. 😉
@Kristina, Now floral pants I’m scared of. I’m afraid the large print will make my butt and hips look even bigger. But they are so cute!
You look great! I’ve always been a bit scared to wear colored pants because I’m curvy, but I’m starting to rethink that! I just bought my first ever pair of bright red pants. [Yes, I hate to admit it, but there’s a possibility I was influenced by the Duchess of Cambridge. :)] The outfits in your pics are bold but they look fantastic. Maybe I’ll have to take a deep breath and spring for the jeans??? Thanks for the inspiration!
Breathe – we can do it together. Just baby steps in the bold department. Honestly, I have NOT gotten up the nerve to wear the ALL peach outfit. hahah Maybe by summer, but the white and peach – love it. 🙂
@Jen, at least you had the nerve to photograph yourself in it and put it online!!! I’d never have picked up on any hesitation if you hadn’t said that! Go for it girl!
Those look GREAT! I have been apprehensive to put a pair of colored jeans on my 43 year old self but you have inspired me! Can’t wait to see what you have for us next week ($20 off coupon?). Luv that scarf too! I have a cream one very similar but yours is a great color.
Ok, 43 year old selves with colored jeans unite. If I can do it, you can do it too. 🙂
Amy,
I am 44 and rocked my hot pink skinny jeans the other day. Got lots of compliments. And, I am not skinny either. I’m actually about 15-20 pounds overweight than I should be. If you wear them with tall boots and a long shirt they work on any body shape at any age. Go for it! If you don’t want to try such a bright color start try a deep purple or burgundy.
I love Not Your Daughter’s Jeans. Yes, they are expensive, but I try to get them when they are on sale, like at the Nordstrom anniversary sale. Or I think Macy’s has them on sale sometimes. I am 5’10” and a size 14. I have a burgundy pair of them in leggins that are SO comfortable…and I didn’t think I could wear leggings or skinny jeans because I am heavier (pear shaped) on bottom than top…but they look fine, with a longer top or sweater…I have a pair of NYDJ skinny jeans in grey with a subtle python snake print, and a pair of dark navy blue ones. They are SO comfortable, higher rise, and stretchy. I have two pairs of just regular blue jeans too, one pair is bootcut. I am eyeing a pair of ankle-length jeans in watermelon color for spring!
I’m a total “apple” shape…. think no waist with narrow hips (or perhaps a tree, as it’s like being straight up and down). My problem is the fact that my bottom doesn’t hold up the pants, so I spend all my time trying to hold them up. 🙂 Wonder if the Gap jeans might work for my body-type?
Yes, I have trouble finding jeans that fit. I prefer bootcut longer length jeans in a dark wash. I love how cute the colored jeans look on you, but I have never felt like I was able to pull them off.
I LOVE the new Skimmer jeans that you are wearing in your fashion post this week. I think these would be a great fit for most body types including mine! I have a 6month old baby and I’m no where near my prebaby body and need some new pants and I would love to get a pair of these!!!!!
I just got a pair of peach skimmers at TJ Maxx for $25 the brand is Velvet and they are so cute! I actually try to buy bottoms on the cheap because my weight fluctuates(gained weight and now am trying to lose weight) and I cant see buying a $100 pair and then they dont fit a couple months later. I have also gotten quality pants for cheap if you shop clearance. My brag is a Michael Kors pant w/ original tag at $110 I got for $15!
I LOVE these coral jeans. Last year I started wanting to incorporate this color back in my wardrobe. Turquoise also has been on the list. It seems that color has recently come back in, and this is such an eye catching one.
I bought a pair of these jeans at Walmart last year. I didn’t know what to wear with them except white or cream, but the black shirt with that scarf seems to pull the look together. I am 51 and I bought skinny jeans, but I still like them. I’ve seen a few articles here and there that skinny jeans aren’t for anyone over 20. I am searching for ways to be able to wear them like a 51 year old, and still feel happy wearing them. I had a bathroom this color many years back. I have been thinking of making this great coral color sneak back into one room here, any room, I just don’t know what one. Your outfit looks so “Spring*y”, It makes me want to get mine out and wear them, but it’s still in the 30’s here.
Don’t listen to those articles. 🙂 If you like them, wear them. I still wear mine too but I just make sure that I always have a larger shirt that colors at least a little of my bootie. 🙂
