Christmas Cruising – Some of the best Christmas traditions for the family are simple and sweet and require little more than hot chocolate and a full tank of gas. Right before Christmas get the whole family together for “Christmas lights” cruising in the car. Prepare a thermos of hot chocolate and give everyone an insulated cup. Take a journey around your neighborhood (or visit another neighborhood) and check out all the beautiful Christmas lights. Have each person vote on who has the best lights of the season and then stop at that house and take a family picture in front of it. Add the photo to your holiday tradition book or place it in a photo frame.
Another twist on this is to make your evening a complete surprise. Once everyone has their jammies on, and has been tucked in bed, do a surprise fire drill escorting them quickly outside. Have the car packed with all their favorite snacks, dial the radio to your favorite Christmas station and cruise away. 🙂
This is one of our fav Christmas traditions. We try to do this each weekend in December… jammies, hot cocoa & a warm, fresh from the oven cookie – PERFECT!
I’ve never thought of doing this late at night with jammies on–what fun that would be! Thanks for the inspiration (as always)!
We used to do this when I was little with one of my aunts. She had all of the cousins over for pizza & cookie decorating, then we went to look at lights in our pajamas.
Now I live in the country, and there are no lights to see! Something I miss doing with our boys!
We do this every year! It’s so much fun. We don’t necessarily do it in our pajamas (that could get chilly!) or take a family picture, but we love driving around listening to Christmas music, drinking hot chocolate, and looking at all the festive lights. We always did this on Christmas Eve when I was a kid and it was great.
Lol, I glanced at the title real quick and read “Christmas Cursing.” I guess maybe I’m a teeeeeny bit stressed about the holidays right now.
HA! Sarah, thank you for sharing that. You made my day. Not because I find cursing particularly funny, but I ‘m with you about being alittle stressed out ! Thanks for making me laugh!
We do this as well! When we were out a few weeks ago looking at Christmas lights, we came upon a church doing a living nativity. An unexpected treat!
I LOVE looking at Christmas lights. 🙂 Planning on going with my mom, sis, and sis-in-law soon. My girls are still young enough that they start to whine after about 10 minutes. They can stay home. :s
Our family holidays are steeped in tradition and it is a wonderful thing. Our grown children still come home for the holidays and make it a point not to miss a single fun happening. We hold an annual Christmas open house for friends and family, we do a big Christmas Eve celebration complete with entertainment by the kids and fun family games like Holiday Trivia Relay, where we actually call family that is not with us for help with the answers or Santa Bingo.. you can read about our family holiday traditions at our family site Celebration Ideas Online at http://www.celebrationideasonline.com/index.html
long standing activity with children and grandchildren. Now that the grandchildren are not always available, hsb and i still love doing it. if they are with us they love comng along. Sort of destresses and adds to the mood.
I love that you both still do this. It sure is a destresser, isn’t it? 🙂
