HDTV Mohu Leaf Indoor Antenna: Holiday Giveaway Bash

Today begins our annual week long holiday giveaway bash, but since I am on plane heading to Peru with Compassion International, I’ve asked our 18 year old son to give his review of our next giveaway. Since he is the resident techie, he is the perfect person to look into it. Instead of posting a few giveaways each day, prescheduled posts will be going up Monday and early Tuesday, but then will be live blogging from Peru and will finish the giveaways when I return next week.

As a poor college student who is just getting his own apartment, cable is one of those things that has been placed on the, “I Can’t Afford” list. Lucky for me, Mohu created this great product, The HDTV Leaf, which enables me to get most of my priority channels. The Leaf is a simple device that you plug into the back of your TV and it picks up any TV stations that are broadcasting a signal within 30-35 miles. The Leaf picks up the signal and displays it on your TV – in HD!

I know this sounds like some type of cheesy advertisement, but this really is worth it. I was pretty skeptical of their product at first, but it definitely meets my standards (which are pretty high). It supports full 1080 HD which is really nice if you still want to keep your big LED TV. Combine this with my PlayStation, and I basically have full cable while saving $50 a month. This is also great for any families who are either struggling financially, or who don’t want their kids addicted to television. Although, I do have Netflix as well, this works as a stand alone unit, and it really isn’t necessary to have subscription based TV accounts.

If you don’t feel comfortable working with technology and feel like this would be too difficult to use, don’t worry – it is extremely simple. It is a very simple plug and play device that will be simple for any type of user. Unscrewed the cable connection, hook up The Leaf, set TV to antenna mode, and you are set to receive a handful of TV stations.

What my mom loves about this is that it’s super thing and easy to hide.

The Leaf is the small black thing hidden under the cabinet.

Since I am all about money saving options, you can cut your monthly cable bill. The Leaf costs $50 (or $40 on Amazon), so if your basic cable bill is $20 a month, you’ll make your money back in three months! Other benefits:

  • Allows users to pull in the top-20 shows on TV, with major networks including ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and PBS
  • Has “omnidirectional” reception, meaning that it should ideally pull in stations from all directions
  • The Leaf is paper-thin and can be easily hidden behind a picture frame, cabinet or bookshelf without affecting reception
  • Does not require power in order to function (although the TV must be powered on)
  • According to testing, it is the best performing indoor antenna on the market currently

Two Balancing Beauty and Bedlam Winners will receive a Leaf.

There are multiple ways to enter (up to 4 entries total on my giveaway), but only one entry is necessary.

  1. We cancelled our cable three years ago because we wanted to save money and we didn’t want the TV to be the center of our kids’ lives. We now have a Netflix subscription and the kids have an hour of screen time a day. I love it–but the guys do miss their sports channels!

  2. We’ve already cut cable but this would allow us to drop our hulu membership. 🙂

  3. I already susbcribe to you via Google Reader!

  4. We have been cable free for 2 years, and have just had an antenna. But recently, our reception has not been good…so I would love to win this!!

  5. I subscribe via Google Reader

  6. Shannon Driscoll Stout says:

I’m not sure if I’d be able to cut my cable. We do have an upper package so we can get to watch our Pittsburgh Penguins (when they do play). We also want to use the capabilities of our HDtv. So, we’ll save money other place to get a great picture on our main tv. But, I would consider cutting the cable to our bedroom tv.

  7. Shannon Driscoll Stout says:

    I subscribe via email.

  8. jeannine s says:

We did cut cable to save money. We have cable internet and stream netflix, hulu plus

  18. Jennifer Roehl says:

We do not currently have tv. We have a tv but no television service. We use our tv strictly for watching movies. It’s worked well thus far but soon we will be moving to a new state and I think I’d like to get at least a few channels to keep up on local news.

  19. We already cut out DirecTV to save money. This would make it so much easier to watch TV!!! So, in short-yes I would consider cutting cable to save money. 🙂

  20. I subscribe in a reader (Google Reader).

  29. I subscribe through a reader.

  30. We are trying to figure out the best options for us when we discontinue our cable. Previous antennas we tried haven’t worked at our house so it would be great if we could get this to work for us!

  31. We don’t presently have cable and haven’t for awhile — we use Netflix and Hulu and the computer presently. I know my Men (hubby and two teen boys) would absolutely LOVE this!!!

  32. We do not have cable but we do have Netflix. My husband (and probably my sons) would love to get more channels. (They would also probably love something electronic to play around with).

  52. Wow! That would be awesome to have and it would help the entertainment budget! Thank you for the opportunity to win this great gift.

  53. We cut cable too…$$$$!

  54. I subscribe via Google Reader! 🙂

  57. I subscribe via RSS.

  58. We cut cable a while ago and haven’t looked back!

  59. We cut out cable 1 year ago this Christmas, and I have not missed it at all. We do have Netflix. But Netflix doesn’t even come close to the cost of cable! Anything else we watch is free online or we use our indoor antennae. I don’t know why anyone pays for cable.

  60. I’ve been without cable for about 4 1/2 years, and credit that decision to be a huge reason I’ve lost 80 pounds. Amazing when I stopped planning life around tv, but would love to have more than nbc again.

  61. Oh my yes; we’d definitely consider getting rid of cable… We only have the most basic limited package, but we had to get that in order to have any consistent reception at all. So I would LOVE to win this and give it a try! Thanks!

I would love this we don’t have any cable

  130. Currently do not have cable, tired of paying the bill and not much worth watching. Would love to be able to watch some football games.

  131. We don’t have cable. Sometimes I wish we did, but I can’t see spending money on such a non-necessity. We have old-fashioned bunny ears that don’t work very well.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) for us our son, who still lives at home works for a major satellite company and one of the perks is free (or close to it) satellite. My son takes care of it so to us it is free, to him, it’s helping out a little 😀 !!!! TV is a time sucker, dont’ get me wrong i like to watch it way too much as it is!! I would love this for my mother-in-law, if I won it I think i would give it to her (after testing it out of course!!). I am an email subscriber!! PICK ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
