When I spied both mums and pumpkins at Aldi for under $3, I knew this festive fall idea must be re-shared. I mean, how cute are these? It will never get old.

Last Saturday, some brand new friends joined our family for dinner.

As they walked through the door, arms extended, they offered us a precious momento of true Southern Hospitality – this beautiful fall mum.

It was such a gracious sentiment. It’s not often that people come bearing gifts anymore, and honestly, they shouldn’t have, but since they did, I thought I would share the creativity.

They didn’t just grace us with some beautiful mums, but they went a step further and planted them in a pumpkin. It’s such a perfect way to decorate for  fall festivities, and easily adds that extra dramatic touch. It’s a simple process, but one that pakcs a perfect decorative punch.

Southern Living

Right now, it’s displayed in this place of honor near our fireplace, but it’s looking a bit tiny, and I’m thinking a huge mum right there would be beautiful. Then I can keep this one on my counter where it has been looking awfully cute.

Here are some simple directions on how to make a pumpkin planter for yourself.

  1. Choose your perfect pumpkin (make sure it doesn’t have any soft spots or it will decay quickly.
  2. Pick your choice of plants that can withstand the colder temperatures. I recommend mums or pansies, since you will definitely want to display some of these outside.
  3. Carefully cut a circular opening in the top of the pumpkin, making sure the hole is large enough to slide the plant in.
  4. Scoop out the loose pulp and seeds from the pumpkin and save them for later. (Roast them for a fun fall treat.) Scrape the inside of the pumpkin until it’s clean and level.
  5. Next, you have two choices. You can just place your potted plant into the pumpkin, while it’s still in the plastic container or your second option is to add  Miracle Gro planting soil, remove the mum, roots and all from the pot, and then literally plant the mum in the pumpkin. (This is the method our guests chose.)
  6.  Adjust the pot  until you have the right height for your flowers.

I just love all the ways that one can decorate with this beautifully creativity twist. I tend to stay away from all the scary decorating, and focus on turning these fall time fruits into my statement pieces throughout the home.

Don’t you just love this new twist on a Halloween classic?

I JUST love them. With guests coming over this weekend, I am definitely going to be adding to my mum/pumpkin collection.
